“Certainly, massive new investment in infra, energy, transport and communications can, and will, help boost trade even further. But this is a proposed stimulus to something that already exists. The Middle East is already home to a large Indian diaspora, and there are very close trade ties already; the same with Europe,” Frankopan said.

The export goods include pharmaceuticals, gems and jewellery, textiles, and machinery, while imports (USD 4.06 billion) include pulses, timber, pulp and paper, and mining products.

“There has been a lot of momentum in the talks that were taking place on the new trade deal. And for that to be suspended, probably for a significant period of time, I just see that as a blow to both of these countries.”
