The ship management sector in India is poised for a compounded annual growth rate of over six per cent in the next few years, an official of the Hong Kong-headquartered Anglo-Eastern Group said. The growth of the sector would boost employment opportunities for Indian seafarers, its CEO Captain Bjorn Hojgaard said.
Citing the example of India which phased out price controls for transport fuels in late 2014, the Aayog said the overall subsidy levels are still distorting the market, giving carbon-intensive modes of transport an undue advantage.
The passage being prepared is called the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol (IBP) Route number 5 and 6. It runs from Maia near Farakka in India to Aricha in Bangladesh. Dredging work is also underway to ensure that there is enough depth on the waterway all throughout the year.
For the development of inland water transport in the country, 111 waterways — including five existing and 106 new ones — spread over 24 states have been declared national waterways under the National Waterways Act, 2016, Sonowal said.`
