India’s cargo handling capacity at ports is expected to get a fillip from 2024 with commissioning of some facilities at Vizhinjam in Kerala and beginning of work at Vadhavan in Maharashtra. The first stage of the Vizhinjam Port is nearing completion and it will serve as the country’s first mega transhipment container terminal, said officials.

Adani Group-owned Mundra port in Gujarat has surpassed pre-Cyclone Biparjoy levels of around 4,900 TEUs by handling over 5,300 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in July 2023. Despite a six-day operational downtime caused by the cyclone, the port posted 4.4% YoY growth in Q1 FY24 in container handling.
The amount is being invested in five projects on the rivers Brahmaputra (NW 2), Barak (NW 16), Dhansiri (NW 31) and Kopili (NW 57) to leverage the waterways for strategic improvement of ties with neighbouring countries.
Tugs, used to pull and push big cargo ships, and guide them into and out of a port, are operated by bunker oil but the port plans to introduce electricity operated green tugboats. Tugboats are also used as standby vessels for safety and emergency requirements.
