In 2023, cargo shipments along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) reached a record-breaking 36.254 million tons, exceeding the federal project target set by Russia’s nuclear entity, Rosatom. This achievement was noted before the year’s end, with partner companies, including NOVATEK, Gazprom Neft, LUKOIL, and Nornickel, contributing significantly.
Exporters said 95% of vessels had rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope on the southern tip of Africa, adding 4,000 to 6,000 nautical miles and 14-20 days to journeys from India since Houthi militants began attacking shipping in November.
